Age of War

How does Age of War’s gameplay work?

The strategy game Age of War aims to lead your people through several centuries while protecting your bases from raids and demolishing the enemy bases. This takes careful planning, resource management, and tactical thinking.

In essence, you have to finish a mission to progress through each of the five ages. These include the Space Age, the Medieval Ages, the Future, and the Prehistoric Age. You use the gold you obtain from successfully finishing your missions to unlock additional units, buildings, and upgrades. As a primitive tribe, you will begin the game by gathering resources, creating resources, and defending your base. To go on to the next age, your ultimate goal is to destroy the opponent’s base.

Age of War was one of my favorite 2D destructive tower defense games in my early 20s. Millions of people worldwide play this simple but addictive game. So it is pretty understandable if you’re looking for similar games to Age of War to try and somewhat re-live that experience. We’ve racked our brains to compile the list below; check it out.

Age of War 2

It’s a cheat as this is Age of War’s sequel, but it merits a spot on our list to ensure you didn’t miss it (personally eagerly awaiting Age of War 3).

This game requires you to defend your base from enemy attacks and proceed through numerous ages, each reflecting a different historical period. It has more custom features than the original, but the gameplay is similar.

Castle Storm: Complete Edition

I think this is definitely the game you are looking for and have in mind when trying to find games like Age of War but wanting something a bit more advanced. It is a unique take on medieval warfare.

You must employ a ballista to throw weapons at opposing towers, spear incoming attackers, send troops, and use powerful spells.

As mentioned, it has many similarities to Age of War but is more intense, so if you want a tough game, this is it.

Spellbinders

This unusual game is worth trying. Visually stunning—I’ve added gameplay in the video above. Spellbinders involve joining the Titans’ conflict to summon battlefield bragging rights. You can choose from many units and Titans with different strengths and limitations. Strategy is the main focus, so if you want a defensive game, this is it.

The Battle of Polytopia

Tribes are the setting for this turn-based strategy game. You must defeat other tribes to bring your tribe to glory in this game. This is one of the most unique games on this list and worth playing.

This game soared in popularity when Elon Musk tweeted that it’s his favorite Tesla vehicle game. I believe there’s a lot to take in at first, but once you start playing, you get the feel of it.

Rise of Civilizations

This game requires you to lead your civilization from the Stone Age to the current times. You must carefully manage resources and make civilization-changing decisions.

This game also has a multiplayer mode where you can fight others worldwide. The ability to play together, other than Clash of Clans and a few others, is the most social component of the game.

In summary

I have played several great Age of War-like games. I recommend any of these strategy games for a nice experience.

Are there any outstanding games like Age of War I missed? I’d love to hear about them and check them out; if I like them, I’ll add them to the list.
